Garage Door Remote Installation
I was keeping the garage door remote in the center console (locked) and would always forget to unlocked before heading home. So I'd get in the driveway, turn off the car, unlock the center console, open the garage door, restart the car and pull in. This gets old fast!
The first step was to figure out where to put the switch. I
don't have any unused knockouts to the left of the steering
wheel so that was out. I then saw an article on Miata.net
where someone used the access panel on the side of the
center console. That looked like a good place.
Second step as to get the parts. I used a Radio Shack switch
(part no. 275-644) and a
Sky Link model 68 remote.
After configuring the remote to work with my garage door
opener, I opened it up and took it apart. I soldered a small
two conductor wire to the switch terminals on the back of
the circuit board. I drilled a small hole in the side of the
case and ran the wire through it.
Here it is, ready to install. I drilled a 1/2" hole in the
knock out, near the back and mounted the switch. I left the
remote in its case since I figured that would protect it.
Plus, if I ever want to take it out and use it stand-alone,
I'll be able to.
The remote slips right up into the opening. I did check this
before hand to make sure it would fit. It fits in tight
enough that I don't think it will rattle. It should be pretty
easy to get out to change the battery. It also doesn't block
access to the mounting bolt.
Here it is all installed. It looks pretty good and is easy to
reach. It took between 1 and 1.5 hours to wire it up and
install.
