Car Club Event Planning Resources - Event Types
The first step is to determine what kind of event you would like to put on. There are many types of events and the effort required to host them varies tremendously. They range from a simple Fun Run where the cost and complexity is low to a Track Event where the cost is relatively high.Look through the list below for an idea of some of the various types of events that are possible.
Fun Run - The basic, most common event type. Consists of a "follow the leader" drive to a destination.
Road rally - This category involves some type of challenge. Often, participants are on their own for part of the drive, reconvening at the end destination.
Time and distance rallies - The goal is to arrive at an unknown destination at the correct time by accurately following a set of instructions that define your exact route and speed.
Poker runs - Collect a poker hand at stops along a given route and win prizes at the end destination. Participants travel at their own pace.
Track events - Driving on a real racetrack under controlled conditions at speed. May include driver's training.
Overnighters - Any overnight trip, usually to a destination where round trip in one day is not practical. May be composed of other types of events for the route there and back.
Autocross - A course laid out with cones where you race against the clock under controlled conditions. A parking lot or any other large, empty, paved space serves as the venue for these events.
Funkhana - A short course, usually laid out in a parking lot, where the driver must maneuver the car as directed with the participation of a passenger, who is given other challenges. Generally, this is a timed event where each challenge is rated for accuracy.
Mystery drive - Only the event leader knows where you'll be going and what you'll be doing!
Show & shine - A chance to show off your car before the public. There is sometimes an entry fee.
Scavenger hunt - Following a set of instructions to find particular items or places. Generally done so that participants reunite at a final destination where an inventory of found items are taken and are prizes awarded.
These are only some possibilities. Use your imagination! Incorporate more than one event type or come up with something completely different. If you lead, there will be followers!
